THE HAMILTON BROTHERS ARE THE MOST FAMOUS OF ALL WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA POTTERY OWNERS AND THEIR EFFORTS LED TO A SALT GLAZED STONEWARE DYNASTY IN GREENSBORO, PENNSYLVANIA IN THE MID 1800'S.
JAMES AND WILLIAM " LEET" HAMILTON CAME TO GREENSBORO IN 1850 AFTER FORMERLY LIVING IN BEAVER COUNTY, PA.. THE BROTHERS THEN WORKED SIDE BY SIDE WITH EACH OTHER FOR SEVEN GLORIOUS YEARS MAKING ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING STONEWARE CHURNS, CROCKS AND JUGS. THEIR STONEWARE IS REGALED AS SOME OF THE FINEST EVER PRODUCED, BOTH FOR FORM AND ARTISTIC QUALITY.
THE PREDOMINANTLY USED MAKERS STAMP WAS;
JAS. HAMILTON & CO.
GREENSBORO
PA.
WE WERE FORTUNATE TO FIND THIS MORE SCARCE EXAMPLE STAMPED WITH "JAMES" SPELLED OUT ON THE STENCILED FACE AT A COUNTRY AUCTION IN PENNSYLVANIA. AMERICAN STONEWARE COLLECTORS HAS HAD MANY PIECES OF HAMILTON STONEWARE OVER THE YEARS BUT THIS ONE IS ONE OF OUR FAVORITES! IT'S QUITE POSSIBLE IT WAS MADE DURING THE SEVEN YEARS THE BROTHERS WORKED TOGETHER.
